Science Cannot Answer All Questions (The Problem of Scientism)

Core Argument

Scientism holds that science is the only reliable method of obtaining knowledge; only scientifically verifiable propositions are meaningful. But this position is self-defeating: 'Only science gives us knowledge' is not itself a scientific proposition — it cannot be verified by experiment or confirmed by observation. It is a philosophical proposition, so by its own standard it should not be believed. In fact, science itself rests on many non-scientific presuppositions: nature is law-governed (uniformity assumption), human reason is reliable, mathematics can describe physical reality, sensory experience is basically trustworthy. None of these can be proven by science itself. Science is one important method of obtaining knowledge, but not the only one.
